Ever since mortgage rates started recovering in early June 2009, mortgage refinancing has threatened to become more expensive. If you plan to try your hand at mortgage refinancing, heres what you need to know to deal with a volatile market:
* Move quickly. Economic recovery is going to bring progressively higher mortgage rates. Lock in a low rate as soon as possible, or risk losing out on your window of opportunity. Dont expect the Fed to do anything more to lower interest rates: On June 24, 2009, the Federal Reserve said it did not plan to try to lower mortgage rates any farther.
* Consider a fixed interest rate rather than an adjustable interest rate. An adjustable rate mortgage that offers the chance to convert to a fixed rate and lock in a low rate may also be a good investment, but consider the likelihood that rates are going to get much lower than they are now. You may find that locking in a lower rate from the start with a fixed rate mortgage is a wiser tactic, even if you are missing a chance to benefit from any market dips in the coming year.
* Dont wait to start improving your credit score. Your credit score is an essential factor in your final interest rate, and if youre going to do a mortgage refinancing soon, you dont have much time to improve matters. Getting started as soon as you can gives you the longest possible time to heal your credit, and lets mortgage lenders know youre making a serious effort to improve your standing.
* Keep an eye on the news. The recent rise in mortgage rates threatens to stop the recovery of the housing market and slow the U.S.s rebound from recession. Although the Fed doesnt plan to cut rates, other government agencies are working on plans to encourage home buying and mortgage refinancing. Keep your ears open for new programs, and when you learn of one, find out whether you can benefit from it. Stay on top of current events. Mortgage refinancing is going to be hot in summer and autumn 2009. Related Content Refinance rates | Refinance mortgage | Home equity loan | Home equity loans | Refinance |
