We recently remodeled our small row house in the city. We initially hoped to begin the project two years before it actually was able to start. The city permit process took a lot longer than we originally anticipated and was quite the adventure in itself. Two years later, the project was set to begin in mid Winter. We were putting a three story addition on. The process would involve demolishing parts of the back of the hundred year old house, as well as digging out for additional basement space. All I knew is that it was going to be messy. We had to seal off the rooms at the back of the house. The rooms on the other side of that were being remodeled. That meant we needed some moving storage help for all the stuff in those rooms. In hind site, we probably should have put everything in the house in storage. Everything was covered in dust for months and months.
We chose a company that offered moving storage containers that would also store the thing, if we needed. It was brought to our door. It was a big metal thing they moved around with this wheeled contraption. We slowly moved everything from the rooms in the construction zone to the storage container. Our original plan was to leave it in the yard until the project was finished, but it became apparent that it would have to move. The contractors filled up our tiny yard with debris and equipment pretty fast. We dreaded the thought of moving that thing elsewhere, because it seemed like it would add another step in an already inconvenient time in our lives. The moving storage company was so very helpful, in spite of our reluctance. They took our storage container within a day of calling them.
We figured that our belongings would be inaccessible once the moving storage company put it in their storage facility. But all we had to do was call a day in advance and we could access it. The moving storage warehouse was climate controlled and set up with security surveillance cameras. The key to our box was in our hands too. Given that we did not pack things that well, since we thought the storage box was going to live in the backyard, we were able to repack a few things and remove some items.
We were very happy that our belongings were not in the yard and were safely stored with the moving storage people. It ended up taking the contractors 6 months longer than originally anticipated, which is what everyone always tells you. It was hectic enough to just get settled back into the house. So we were not looking forward to the process of bringing that storage container back. Again, the moving storage company made it easy. We called and had that thing delivered within a day. Given that we had already lost the use of our yard for so long, we did not want that metal box hanging around in the yard. We asked them to pick up it a few hours after they delivered it. We unloaded it and got back to cleaning. When we sat down for dinner, we noticed the moving storage container was gone and we had a nice empty yard. Within a week, we were living comfortable in our new and improved house and had forgotten all about the remodeling.
