Businesses are moving more to server colocation. Back a few years, it was more common to try to host servers yourself. The trend was for a company to construct a data center on their premises. There were a number of good reasons for taking this approach to server hosting.
Early on, server colocation companies had many service interruptions. The equipment was relatively new and there were problems as a result. Additionally, with such growth during the Internet boom, many server colocation companies over committed. They were not doing well financially and this lead to bad deal making. As the dot com era died, so did many hosting companies that were not able to provide good service.
So where does that leave the server coloation industry today? There are certainly still companies that over promise and under deliver. But on the norm, enough time has passed that the good companies have sorted themselves from the bad. Also, the technical issues that were common in the early days are gone. Equipment like core routers, load balancers and firewalls are now in very stable releases.
A new comer to the server colocation industry is virtualization. This new technology enables the hosting company to provide very reliable service. This has brought the costs of server hosting down. The large corporations will probably still elect to build data centers, but for the rest of the world the services of colocation are deemed reliable.
